Is road cycling dangerous?

by Jesper Bondo Medhus on December 3, 2006

I found an article at Cyclelicius discussing whether road cycling is dangerous. First of all, I think it is difficult to talk about safety because accidents does happen and always will. It is a part of the game – take a look at this funny video:

There are certainly risks, but cycling in general is not a “dangerous” activity compared to other common activities like driving, walking or playing basketball.

Participation in competitive cycling increases the risks somewhat (as illustrated so well in the video), which is why I advocate helmet use for competitive cycling.

I recken it depends on the road as some are more dangerouse a quiet country lane would probibly be safe while a busy motorway known for car crashes would be dangerouse but as you say accidents can happen even on quiet country lanes.
