What this book helps you do
Fitness alone does not determine how well you perform in a race. Your training also needs to prepare you for the duration, terrain, changes in intensity and decisive efforts of your target event.
This book gives you a practical framework for connecting those race demands with your weekly training.
- Build the consistency and training volume that support long-term progress.
- Identify the specific demands of your target road race.
- Combine interval sessions, endurance rides and recovery with a clear purpose.
- Use a practical 12-week framework to move from general fitness towards race-specific preparation.
- Prepare your pacing, fuelling and race-day execution before the event.
- Review your performance afterwards and use what you learn in your next training cycle.
A practical 12-week race-preparation framework
The book takes you from the foundations of consistent training through increasingly race-specific preparation.
The 12-week framework is not a personalised coaching plan. It shows you how to organise your training and adapt the underlying principles to your target race, training history and available training time.

Is this book for you?
This book is written for road cyclists who:
- Have a target race or competitive event on the calendar.
- Already train regularly but want a clearer connection between training and racing.
- Need to balance ambitious cycling goals with work, family and limited training time.
- Want to understand why sessions belong in the plan, rather than simply following workouts.
- Value practical coaching informed by exercise physiology.
Why I wrote this book
I wrote this book after more than 25 years of studying exercise physiology and coaching cyclists.
I took two months away from my work as a physician to turn those lessons into a practical system for preparing for one target race. My aim was not to produce another collection of workouts, but to show how each phase of training should connect to the demands of race day.
The framework also reflects an important reality for recreational cyclists: training rarely goes exactly according to plan. The book therefore explains how to keep progressing when work, illness, missed sessions or changing circumstances disrupt your original plan.
About the author

Jesper Bondo Medhus, MD, is a physician working in clinical physiology and nuclear medicine and the founder of Training4Cyclists.

His coaching experience includes working with Mads Würtz Schmidt, winner of the 2015 U23 World Time Trial Championship.

In this book, Jesper combines physiological understanding with the practical decisions cyclists and coaches face when preparing for a target race.
